Biography

Gustavo Campos was born in Porto Alegre Brazil – 1979. His first contact with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu occurred while watching tapes of the UFC with his father, he saw the legendary Royce Gracie fighting and was so impressed with the fight that he decided to join a gym at the age of 18.  Guto still lived with his parents at the time, and as he was not doing well in high school his father did not want to help pay so that he could train Jiu-Jitsu.   It was then that he had to find a part-time job to pay for his training.

He started at the academy of Carlos Aveline’s academy,  who was a brown belt from  Ze Mario Sperry and Walter Matos.  Guto adapted very well to the sport and soon went from 3 classes a week to 2 classes a day,  7 days per week in his early months.

Guto’s intense training and love for the sport soon earned him three consecutive world titles(2001, 2002, 2003).   As he progressed through the belt ranking system, in 2004 he received his black belt from Walter Matos.

He wanted to start his own gym but didn’t have enough money to rent a space at the time.  In 2002 as a purple belt, his mother ceded their living room and thus the first headquarters of Guetho Jiu-Jitsu was born, but the space soon became too small and it was necessary to expand rapidly to accommodate the students who were crowding his classes.

Gustavo always wanted to train with one of his childhood heroes (Rickson and Royce Gracie) and in 2007 he got his wish.  Campos traveled to California to train at Rickson Gracie’s Academy, he loved the experience and became good friends with Kron Gracie (Rickson’s son).
