FAQ

What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art developed by the Gracie family in Brazil. They learned it from a Japanese diplomat and transformed it. Instead of focusing on powerful throws, BJJ aims to take opponents to the ground and use joint locks or chokeholds to immobilize them. BJJ is now used by all branches of the armed forces and law enforcement agencies.

How is BJJ different from Karate and other martial arts?

Unlike Karate and other martial arts, BJJ’s basic strategy isn’t to hurt or knock out your opponent. Instead, it focuses on neutralizing, controlling, and immobilizing them. Similar to wrestling, a BJJ fighter aims to take their opponent to the ground and outmaneuver them to achieve a pin or immobilization.

We also have our required no-gi uniforms available for purchase.

Does the uniform policy apply to open mat?

For open mat students are not required to wear the school uniform. Gis worn for open mat can be of any color, but must be free of other school logos.

How does the belt system work in jiu jitsu?

The belt system in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a hierarchical ranking structure that signifies a practitioner’s skill level and experience. BJJ belts are worn as part of the traditional uniform (gi), and each belt has its own color, representing different stages of progression. The journey through the BJJ belt system is not solely about acquiring technical skills but also about personal growth, discipline, and dedication to the art. It is a significant accomplishment to earn a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and many practitioners spend years working toward this achievement.
